Go Reds

The Reds signed Adam Dunn to a two year contract, with a team option for a third. And today is one of my favorite days of the year: pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training. I can't wait for baseball season to start. I may even pay attention to Bud Selig's little World Baseball Classic boondoggle, just so I can watch sooner.

Hear, hear!

I've been occupying the baseball portion of my brain with something lately. If stats are your thing, and I know that they are, I say get thee to sportsmogul.com , where they are giving out a free download of their game, Baseball Mogul 2005. Of course the current version is 2007 (or will be shortly), but hey, I played v.2003 a month ago when it occured to me they might have an update.

It's very interesting, as it starts with existing players on the 2004 rosters but as the simulated years go by they are replaced with fictional players that you pick in the draft. You have to evaluate talent and potential.

It is also interesting because it gives you a glimpse of alternate universes. Austin Kearns becomes a superstar and gets 19 million a year on his next contract! Albert Pujols gets injured and never really recovers! Jeff Bagwell retires with dignity! And if you play it well enough, the Reds compete year-in, year-out on a payroll of <20 million. It is just a game, after all.

THE MIND IS NOT A VESSEL TO BE FILLED BUT A FIRE TO BE KINDLED
